Manchester City are now expected to make their opening bid for West Ham United’s Declan Rice today.

Gianluca Di Marzio’s reports that David Ornstein is now claiming City have entered the race for Rice and will look to beat Arsenal to the signing of the West Ham captain.

Responding to Phillips’ comments that he wants to stay at City this season, Jordan said: “What Kalvin Phillips says and what Pep Guardiola tells him might be two different things,” Simon Jordan said.

“If he says he wants to stay at Man City and Guardiola says, ‘That’s very commendable, son, but you ain’t playing,’ then his attitude will have to change.

“There are a variety of ways this deal can be done because West Ham are going to have a need; they’re going to have to replace this player, and Phillips could be the makeweight.

“Suddenly you’re doing a £75m deal with cash, plus you’re taking Kalvin Phillips, and you’re making it happen that way.”

LP, PRP ask tribunal to compel Gov Mbah to appear, answer questions on alleged certificate forgery

Both the Labour Party, LP, and the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, have asked the Enugu state Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal to compel Governor Peter Mbah to to appear before the tribunal to answer charges of alleged falsification of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, certificate, the Governor tendered to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

At the resumed hearings of the Petitions by both political parties, on Thursday, counsels to the Labour Party, raised for motion interrogatories, seeking for answers from the second respondent, which is Governor Peter Mbah.

Some of the questions being raised by the LP to Mbah which the petitioners want to answer are: when and where did he serve? When was he appointed as Chief of Staff, the date? When was he made commissioner for finance in Enugu State? We want to know the duration he served.

The LP wants Mbah to produce before the Tribunal, the letter of appointment as Chief of Staff, the letter of appointment as commissioner for finance under Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani and the institutions he said he attended; we want to have the documents showing that he attended those institutions.

The tribunal will deliver a ruling on whether Mbah will appear before it to answer the LP questions on Saturday 24th of June.

But the Tribunal ordered Governor Mbah to appear before it on Friday June  24 following an application made by the PRP through its counsel, Ozor Alex Amujiogu.

Governorship Candidates of the LP and PRP, Hon. Chijioke Edeoga and Elder Christopher Agu, respectively, were in court.

Agu is seeking to upturn the declaration of Barr Peter Mbah as the winner of the March 18 governorship election is also claiming that Mbah was not qualified to contest the election, having allegedly forged National Youths Service Corps, NYSC, discharge certificate and also for not obtaining the highest number of votes in the state to be declared winner.

Amujiogu told the tribunal that Mbah was supposed to be in court as a subpoenaed witness. He, however, said from the affidavit deposed to by the bailiff of the Tribunal, it had been difficult to serve Mbah the summon.

Amujiogu then moved an application, urging the Tribunal to grant a substituted service of the summon on Mbah through his counsel.

Although the application was opposed by the three respondents, the INEC, Mbah as well as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on the grounds that it was supposed to come by way of motion, supported by an affidavit during pre-trial session, they were overruled by the Tribunal.

Chairman of the Panel, Justice K. M. Akano ordered that the subpoena be served on Mbah through his counsel and that he should appear before the Tribunal on June 23.

Earlier, the PRP guber candidate during the election, Agu, had also testified before the Tribunal as PW2.

An official of the NYSC from the National Secretariat, Abuja, Barr. Aliu Muhammed, who also appeared on behalf of the Director-General of the Corps, tendered an affidavit to the Tribunal, declaring that an order of a Federal High Abuja, was inhibiting them from tendering the disclaimer the Corps made against Mbah’s certificate.

The PRP lawyer, Amujiogu told newsmen after the Tribunal’s sitting that “our PW2 (Christopher Agu) has already testified before the Honourable Tribunal and he has given a clearer picture, the synopsis of what transpired during the election and we are urging the Tribunal to set aside the purported result in favour of Peter Mbah, the Governor.

“We had an issue of subpoena against Barr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, in which the Tribunal is urging him to appear before it to clarify certain issues against him, based on his NYSC certificate and other matters.

“Surprisingly, he was not in the Tribunal today and the bailiff informed the Tribunal that he is invading service, he cannot find him, the security cannot allow him to serve Mbah the subpoena.

“Then, the Tribunal in its own wisdom, after I have applied, has now permitted the bailiff or myself, to now serve Mbah through his counsel, for him to appear before the Tribunal tomorrow, being 23rd of June, 2023 and clarify certain issues against him before the Tribunal and we have already served him the said subpoena through his lawyer, Ik Onuoma today in court.

“So he must obey the summon of the Tribunal by appearing in person tomorrow, Friday.”

Former Lagos State Governor, Mr Babatunde Fashola, SAN, has charged Nigerians to change from a set of people who know their rights to those who know their duties and perform them.

He stated this on Thursday during the 26th convocation ceremony of the Lagos State University, LASU, where he was among those honoured with honorary doctorate degree.

“Nigeria will be better for it if we change from a set of people who are only concerned about knowing their rights, to become people who know their duties as responsible citizens and perform such duties. At the point we are now, it is pertinent to begin to positively project our dear country globally. Regarding our duties, we can also read what our constitution says and do our duties as responsible citizens,” he said.

Also, speaking on what LASU has achieved over the years, former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi, said he was a 200 level student at the University of Lagos, UNILAG, when LASU was founded in 1983 and that like some of his colleagues, he wondered whether the new university would be able to produce quality graduates.

One must commend the efforts of the late Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande who founded the university and other leaders of Lagos State who are building on that solid foundation,” he said.

Fayemi also lauded the management of LASU, led by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, for the passion and their commitment to work.

The Visitor to LASU, who is also the Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, expressed delight that the institution has continued to live up to expectations.

“We  are impressed with the giant strides recorded so far in LASU. And it is in recognition of that that our administration is supporting the university in every way possible. We know that huge financial commitment is required to move the university forward and that is why new faculties and departments are being set up,” he stated.

Sanwo-Olu also announced N10 million cash reward for Miss Aminat Yusuf, who broke academic record in LASU by getting a perfect CGPA of 5.00 in Law to emerge the best graduating student in the 2021/2022 academic session.

In her speech, the VC, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, thanked the governor for her support for the institution.

Mercy Chinwo ministered for free – Pastor Poju counters Fr Oluoma

The Senior Pastor of The Covenant Nation (TCN) and convener of The Platform Nigeria, Poju Oyemade, has countered Nigerians dragging the popular gospel singer Mercy Chinwo for allegedly charging huge amounts to sing at churches.

A Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Chinenye Oluoma, discussed in a trending video how gospel superstars like Chinwo monetise their ministrations in church.

Oluoma, who lashed out at gospel musicians who demand huge payments to perform in a place of worship, claimed that Chinwo charges N10 million to minister at worship centres.

His claim has been generating mixed reactions from concerned citizens who took to social media to state their opinions on the matter.

Wading into the controversy, Pastor Oyemade revealed in a tweet on his official handle that the singer had last Sunday ministered in his church without pay.

He wrote: “Mercy Chinwo sang at our service at Lekki last Sunday, and the honorarium we gave was at our discretion. She made NO formal charges.”

‘I and Don Jazzy created the syllabus of music’ – Wande Coal

Nigerian singer, Oluwatobi Wande Ojosipe, popularly known as Wande Coal, has claimed that he and his former producer and record label boss, Don Jazzy, created “the syllabus of music.”

He said a lot of people read through what he and Don Jazzy did and took from it and created their own sounds

The ‘Bumper 2 Bumper’ crooner made the claim during a recent interview with Cool FM, Lagos.

He, however, said there was nothing wrong with the youngsters copying what he and Don Jazzy did.

He said, “Me and Don Jazzy have always had a bond. He knows I always come with energy. Even in the studio, I’m always pumped. I’m like, yo, let’s do this sound. And he makes sure he kills it.

“So, it’s like symbiotic [relationship]. I feel like me and Don Jazzy created the syllabus of music. We created a syllabus of music and a lot of people read that and then took what they had to take to create their own. And that is what is happening now.

“There is no problem with that as long as we are still here making magic with the new generation’s sounds.”

Wande Coal and Don Jazzy worked together at the defunct Mo’hits Record and Mavin before parting ways in 2013.

in Yobe Over 44,000 households was affected by flood

Latest statistics released by the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), showed that a total of 44,845 households across 17 local government areas of the state were affected by flood disaster last year.

During the trying period, the agency noted that wanton destruction of lives and property was recorded, leading to the displacement of hundreds of people in the affected communities.

It is against this backdrop that, Governor Mai Mala Buni approved immediate commencement of validation and

verification of registered 2022 flood victims ahead of the Special National Economic Livelihood Emergency Intervention (SNELEI) intervention in the state.

According to SEMA, SNELEI is a federal government intervention designed to provide support to victims of the 2022 flood disaster.

Targeting more than 24,000 prospective beneficiaries in the state, it said the support is expected to come in the form of food, livelihood support tools and crop seedlings, among others, which will be distributed directly to the victims to build their socio-economic resilience.

“The support, which is implemented by NEMA-SEMA, is predicated on the number of people affected by the 2022 flood and classified as most vulnerable.

“Validation has since commenced across the LGAs”, the Agency noted

Olawepo-Hashim - Subsidy removal, painful surgery needed to save Nigeria’s economy

A former presidential candidate and business man, Mr Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim has appealed to the Labour Movement and other Social groups to accept the removal of the subsidy on  Petroleum product as a painful surgical procedure instituted to excruciate a  dangerous cancerous cell in the life of a patient in order to save the critically ill.

In a statement from his media office in Abuja on Monday, Olawepo-Hashim explained that since the subsidy was removed already in the 2023 budget by  the previous administration, it is now obvious because the market price is reflected and the entire market has absorbed the increase with prices going up for different items.

According to him, “even if the subsidy is reversed, prices of goods and services will not be reviewed to their previous levels and it would be a loss to the Economy.”

He added that “there cannot be any sensible talk about undoing what has been done but managing the pains of the adjustment on vulnerable groups such as Labour, who do not have the price mechanism for their services to absorb the pain.”

He noted that “as an enterpreneur, what I have done in my business is to pay immediately, a transport subsidy across  board; same amount to all my workers without prejudice to their salary scale. I believe the Government and all employers of labour will do the same.”

He maintained that “there are far more benefits of removal of the subsidy to the economy, chief among which include massive investment in the mid and downstream sectors of the economy that hitherto have been locked out due to the subsidy regime.

These sectors, he argued, typically create  millions of jobs and remain a critical section that add value to the Economy.

“In the past I have been a strident campaigner against removal of petrol subsidies because I had no trust in the ability of most of the previous governments to manage the gains of the  exercise for the benefit of all Nigerians.

“The times are different now. Nigeria has a new political-Economic manager in President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, we can trust his ability to manage the exercise in the interest of all.

“Comrades, we have marched together in the past three and a half decades saying no to subsidy removal, but it is time to shift grounds; let us only insist on welfare and  protection for the working class in the midst of this adjustment,” he said.

After keeping her daughter’s identity secret for over two decades, Kate Henshaw finally unveils daughter, Gabrielle

After keeping her daughter’s identity secret for over two decades, Nollywood star Kate Henshaw, on Monday afternoon, shared a rare photo of both of them.

Unlike her colleague, Genevieve Nnaji, who has managed to keep her only child Theodora away from the public’s prying eyes, Henshaw’s move has earned her admiration.

Gabrielle, 23, is the product of a marriage between Henshaw and her former husband, Roderick James Nuttal.

Henshaw and Mr Nuttal tied the knot in 1999, while their daughter was welcomed the following year.

It came as a pleasant shock to the fans of the actress when she posted a photograph of herself and the young Gabrielle on Instagram on Monday.

Not much is known about her daughter, though some say she lives in the UK, where her father is based.

In 2011, to the dismay of her fans, Henshaw announced that they were getting divorced, although she didn’t give reasons.

Since her divorce, Henshaw has not been known to be romantically linked to anyone, at least not publicly.

Besides having a Nubian tone while her daughter has light skin, many Instagram users opined that their resemblance was uncanny.

Although Henshaw, a fitness buff, did not say why she celebrated Gabrielle, she described herself as a proud mum.

So proud of you, dearie. May your light keep shining brighter and brighter,” she wrote on her Instagram page with over two million followers.

The duo wore white outfits and sported an afro hairdo, highlighting their resemblance.

The actress’ colleagues, including the likes of Funke Akindele, Ivie Okujaye, Ufuoma McDermott, Mo Abudu, VJ Adams, Dakore Akande and others, have been fawning over the photographs of the mother and daughter.

Kate Henshaw

The award-winning actress studied Medical Microbiology at the School of Medical Lab Science at Lagos University Teaching Hospital.

Before becoming an actress, Henshaw worked as a model, featuring in various commercials, including a print and television advert for Shield deodorant.

She won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the movie ‘Stronger than Pain’ in 2008.

In 2011, Henshaw was honoured by the Nigerian federal government as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

She has acted in many acclaimed movies, including ‘Chief Daddy’, ‘New Money’, ‘The Ghost and the House of Truth’, ‘4th Republic’, ‘The Women’ and ‘Blood Sisters’.

Also a politician, the veteran actress, in 2014, aspired to represent the Calabar Municipal/Odukpani Federal constituency under the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) but lost the primaries.

APC thugs attacked me with guns in court

A former governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Segun Showunmi, has narrated how he was attacked on Monday at the sitting of the Ogun State election petition tribunal in Abeokuta.

Mr Showunmi blamed the attack on thugs he associated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The PDP chieftain narrated his experience at a press conference later.

He explained that he was in court in solidarity with his party and its governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, at the first hearing of their petition challenging the reelection of Governor Dapo Abiodun of the APC.

“I alighted at a reasonable distance from the courthouse because I knew that parking would be a problem, and I proceeded to walk. As I moved towards the environment, I had seen some type of terrible characters that in a decent society, they should be in prison, milling around and driving all over the place. Some of them are fairly known operators who play around their parks and garages.

“I approached the court gate, and it was locked and. I realised that there was no room in the court anymore, and I simply turned back. As I made to leave, a horde of murderers descended on me, bringing out cudgels and whips; they brought out guns, and they were generally misbehaving. Luckily, a security vehicle was not too far of, and I entered the security vehicle to make my way to leave,” Mr Sowunmi narrated.

The politician said he could not recollect any time in the history of Ogun State where “brigandage, misbehaviour, thuggery, criminality, marauders and murderers” were elevated to that level.

He called on President Bola Tinubu to check thuggery in the state, stressing that, “not even under Muhammadu Buhari has brigandage been tolerated to the level that we are beginning to see it now.”

Mr Showunmi, one of Atiku Abubakar’s spokespersons in the 2019 election, accused the police at the court of “standing by helpless as though they did not understand that they have the responsibility to keep the peace.

“I kept asking myself, how could they have been watching APC thugs hold guns and sticks?

“I was asking myself, when did Ogun State become a place where thugs are sent for the opening day of a tribunal? How does it become fashionable for you to mobilise miscreants to the tribunal?”

Relocate tribunal to Abuja

Mr Showunmi urged the Court of Appeal to relocate the tribunal to Abuja to avoid further attacks on PDP members.

“Our position is that, the President of the Court of Appeal, in his wisdom, should please relocate the Ogun State election tribunal from Abeokuta because it is no longer safe so that we can go and have that tribunal in the peaceful atmosphere of Abuja and everybody can have the case adjudicated, and we can deal with the outcome of the court cases.

Activities resume at Oyo bus terminals

Barely 24 hours after the inauguration of the new Executive Council members of the Parks Management System in Oyo State, normal activities, on Monday, resumed at the various motor parks in Ibadan, the state capital.

Our correspondent who visited some of the parks within the Ibadan metropolis observed that transporters have moved into the multi-billion naira Bus Terminal at both the Challenge and the Ojoo areas which had been under lock and key after the ousting of the fleeing leader of the disbanded Parks Management System, Mukaila Lamidi, popularly called Auxillary.

That Auxiliary was declared wanted by the Oyo State Police Command for allegedly stockpiling arms and ammunition after the PMS was dissolved by the state Governor.

Aero To Complete Airlift Operations By June 12

One of the approved airlines transporting Nigerian pilgrims to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for this year’s Hajj exercise, Aero Contractors, has assured that it would complete the airlifting of the 8,033 intending pilgrims allocated to it by the National Hajj Commission (NAHCON) to the Holy Land on or before June 12.

Alhaji Liman Mohammad, the officer coordinating 2023 Hajj for Aero Contractors, gave the assurance in a statement released Sunday’s night .

He said, out of the 8,033 allocated to the airline, 3,223 pilgrims from Nasarawa, Oyo and Adamawa States have been airlifted to Saudi Arabia.

According to him the airline had moved to Lagos where it will transport about 1,500 intending pilgrims from Oyo and Lagos States in five flights, saying the company is determined to conclude the transportation of all the pilgrims assigned to it before the closure of Jeddah airport.

“So from June 12, we will be free. Jeddah International Airport will be closed on June 26, that is about 14 days after we finished our operation, by God’s grace,” he said.

Group urges APC to allow lawmakers -elect to pick their leaders

A Civil Society Organisation, Better Nigeria Movement has called on the leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress to allow the lawmakers-elect to select their leaders.

The PUNCH had reported that the APC nominated the immediate past minister of Niger Delta affairs Godswill Akpabio, and the senator representing Kano North, Barau Jibrin, as the senate president and deputy respectively.

In the lower legislative chamber, the ruling party nominated a lawmaker from Kaduna, Tajudeen Abbas, and a lawmaker from Imo, Benjamin Kalu, as speaker and deputy.

The move, however, has been rejected by some members of the party, and that of the opposition parties as well as some lawmakers-elect.

Amid the leadership tussle, the President, Bola Tinubu scheduled a meeting with the lawmakers-elect from opposition parties on Monday.

However, in a statement on Sunday, the Secretary of the group, Bako Saliu described the party’s action as an imposition that could plunge the 10th assembly into crisis if not rescinded.

The statement partly read, “The ninth National Assembly will draw the curtains on its activities in a fortnight. The leadership of the All Progressives Congress had in April zoned the leadership of the 10th National Assembly to the South-South (Senate President), North West (Deputy Senate President), Speaker (North West), and Deputy Speaker (South East).

While the anointed candidates have been traversing the length and breadth of the country seeking the support of colleagues, state governors, and other stakeholders, there are moves by some gladiators to upstage a surprise come June 14, when the legislators will be inaugurated.

“We believe the lawmakers-elect should be allowed to choose who they want as their leaders. A zone is not a person; even if the NWC zoned the position to the North West and South-South they should allow them to choose the best among those from the region.

“It is very evident that Some of the Lawmakers-elect even those from the same region as the anointed candidates are unhappy with the way anointed speaker and senate president were selected. They have been insisting they were not consulted. It is however an invitation to crisis in the 10th assembly if this is not addressed.

Tinubu condoles over train crash - Indian PM

President Bola Tinubu has sent his condolences to Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi and the people of the Republic of India following a train crash that killed more than 280 passengers.

Commiserating with the families of the victims, Tinubu, in a statement issued on Saturday via his twitter handle stated, “My heart goes to the families of those affected in the unfortunate and heartrending train crash in the Indian state of Odisha.

“We stand with India in brotherhood at this difficult time. The magnitude of the crash and the high casualty figure call for global support for India to adequately respond to this calamitous accident.

“I send my deepest sympathy and condolences to His Excellency Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the people of India and the families of those trapped in the crash.

Gov Yahaya Bello’s convoy attacked by Gunmen

Gunmen attack Gov Yahaya Bello’s convoy, injure security aides

The Kogi Government on Saturday said the convoy of Gov. Yahaya Bello was attacked on Saturday by gunmen,  along the  Abuja-Lokoja highway.

it said the attack took place near a Naval Base, a few kilometres away from Lokoja, the state capital.

The Kogi Commissioner for Information,  Mr Kingsley Fanwo,  made the disclosure in a statement in Lokoja.

Fanwo alleged that the gunmen were political thugs of an opposition political party in the state, the  Social Democratic Party (SDP).

“The gunmen suspected to be political thugs of the SDP, having sighted the convoy of  Bello approaching,  blocked the road and started shooting at the convoy.

“A Tundra branded with the logo and flags of the party also blocked the governor’s vehicle and the occupants were armed with rifles and short guns.

“But thank God our governor left the scene unscathed and there is no cause for panic.

“Some security aides and other aides attached to the governor sustained some degrees of injuries and have been rushed to medical facilities for attention.

“We urge the people of Kogi to remain calm as security agents are in full control to ensure the arrest of the hoodlums behind the attack, ” he said.

Fanwo said the state government would not allow any breakdown of law and order but would do all it could to bring the attackers to justice.

According to him, the governor has warned that no APC member should get involved in any reprisal attack as insecurity from any quarter will be met with stiff penalties.

Responding, Mr Kunle Afolayo, Media Aide to the  SDP Governorship Candidate, Mr Yakubu Ajaka, denied the allegations saying:  “It was the other way round because it was his political thugs that attacked us.”

“Is it possible for an opposition political party to attack a governor just like that?

“We were on our way to the Palace of Maigari in Lokoja from Koton Karfe this afternoon, when the governor’s convoy, heading to Lokoja from Abuja, met us on the way and launched an attack on us just like that.

“God knows the truth. It’s unfortunate that APC administration in Kogi is using government might against us and to lie against us for a crime they committed against us, ” the media aide said.

IPoB warns security agencies to Stop deceiving Nigerians with fake arrest of ESN commanders

THE Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, yesterday dismissed the claim of the arrest of four Eastern Security Network, ESN, commanders by Nigerian security agents, particularly the Police Navy and Army in Ogbaru, Local Government Area, Anambra State.

IPoB alleged that the security crisis in Ogbaru Local Government Area Anambra State which led to the attack of USA Embassy officials is the result of the war between the oil bunkering cabal and some politicians which polarized the security agencies, and IPoB and ESN are not part of the war in Ogbaru.

A statement on Saturday by IPoB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, entitled, “No ESN Commander was arrested by Nigeria compromised security agents at Ogbaru” alleged that Nigerian security agents made up of Police, Army, Navy and DSS, are deep in the war in Ogbaru LGA and that is why they allegedly refused to carry out an investigation into the attack on USA Embassy Staff convoy, claiming they were not informed of the Embassy officials presence in Anambra State.

The pro-Biafra group alleged that over three weeks after the attack, none of the security agencies or a combination of them have been able to come out to present any arrest made of the perpetrators of such heinous attacks and now are coming up to divert attention with their purported arrest of ESN commanders in Ogbaru.

The separatist group challenged the Nigeria security agencies made up of the Police, Navy, Army and DSS, Nigeria prove their innocence who carried out attack on the USA Embassy Staff convoy instead of playing ostrich on such an international embarrassing attack.

IPoB’s statement read, “We the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPoB, under the command and leadership of our great leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, unequivocally debunk the fabricated and concocted lies from the Nigeria security agents, on their purported arrest of four ESN Commanders in Ogbaru LGA, Anambra State.

“It is pathetic that the compromised Nigeria security agents will always delude themselves with fake claims of ESN Commander’s arrest. We wish to ask them, where was the arrest made? And what are the identities of the so-called commanders arrested?

“We in IPoB wish to tell the public to ignore the professional liars called the Nigeria security agencies, there were no ESN commanders or operatives arrested anywhere in Ogbaru. As usual, the terrorists in uniforms may have arrested innocent people and called them ESN operatives so that they would extort thousands of naira from their victim’s relatives as bail money.

“On the other hand, they may have arrested criminals impersonating ESN. Nigeria security forces regular claims that they have arrested ESN operatives is childish. No ESN operatives was arrested. All ESN commanders and operatives are intact.
